Censoring so that it stays censored
- Pixelation destroys data; overlays do not. Drawing a black rectangle in a document editor often leaves the original underneath, recoverable by anyone who opens the file properly. Pixelation replaces the pixels themselves — once you save, the detail is not in the file any more.
- Small blocks are not enough for text. Letters come from a small alphabet, so a mildly pixelated word can often be guessed or recovered. If you are hiding a name, an address or a number, use a block size large enough that the region is a handful of flat squares.
- Check the result at full size before sharing. The preview is scaled to fit the page, which makes the censoring look stronger than it is. Download the file and open it at 100% — if you can still read it, so can everyone else.
- This pixelates the whole frame. There is no region selector yet. To censor one part, crop that part out, pixelate it, and place it back — or use a larger block size on the whole image if the rest does not matter.
Frequently asked questions
Is pixelation safe for hiding personal data?
Safer than an overlay, because the original pixels are discarded. But use a large block size: lightly pixelated text can sometimes be reconstructed.
Can I pixelate only one area?
Not yet — the whole image is processed. Crop the sensitive region, pixelate it, and composite it back if you need a partial edit.
Does it change the image size?
No. The image is shrunk internally and scaled back up, so the output has the same dimensions as the input.
